Bowties are diagram that visualise a hazardous scenario and creates a clear differentiation between preventative and mitigative risk management measures.  Safety Solutions has extensive expertise in running bowtie studies in all industrial sectors, including dairy, food production, oil and gas, power generation and pulp and paper. We have expertise in the following types of bowtie studies:

a) Pure qualitative bowties – where causes, control and escalations are visualised but no risk reduction quantification is applied to the structure. This has the benefit in communicating risk, but not quantifying risk

b) Semi-qualitative bow-ties – where risk reduction factors are used for controls based on their effectiveness to determine the final consequence risk level.

c) Quantitative bow-ties – where a methodical LOPA approach is applied to the bow-tie development and the frequency of the final outcome is determined.

The bow-tie has 3 main parts:

  • The center of the hazard and top event
  • The left handside of the bowtie represents the causes and preventative controls
  • The right handside represents the mitigation controls and the outcomes.

Safety Solutions uses Meercat RiskView to develop bowties (a cloud based risk assurance platform).
